To kickstart our initiative, we had Ms. Anindita Chakraborty, an eco designer and educator talk to a group of children aged ten to fifteen about “sustainable travel”. Held right before many of us were heading off for our summer vacations, all the lessons learnt during the talk could immediately be put into action. The event started off with an ice-breaker session, where all the participants had to describe themselves with a word (related to travel) starting with the first letter of their name. We got some really creative and witty responses from the audience, including “Adventurous Anam”, “Picturesque Priya” etc. Followed by the introductions, Ms. Chakraborty highlighted how our fancy vacations to different parts of the globe have a detrimental impact on the environment. She kept the participants on their toes with her questions and we all could sense a feeling of guilt take over the audience as they realised the consequences of their actions. To see what the students had taken away from this session, she divided all the students into groups of three and they were given the task of designing a tour plan to any destination of their choice. However, the catch was that they all had to keep the principles of sustainable travel in mind. To conclude the event, Ms. Chakraborty presented us all with a sustainable travel kit, which included a bamboo comb, a bamboo toothbrush, a metal straw, wooden cutlery and a tote bag. Ms. Chakraborty also presented all the children with saplings.
